Triangle House is a proposal for a three bedroom home on a triangular lot in a conservative Houston neighborhood. The site is a forgotten property whose small size and awkward shape makes it unsuitable for typical orthogonal homes. To work within these constraints, we developed a geometric system as an organizing framework — a family of four-sided polygons, each with a square corner provides a system of both rigidity and flexibility.

The home is organized into five volumes, each with a specific purpose and unique size. The perimeter walls of the volumes are monolithic from ground to roof, giving a strong architectural identity as well as construction and mechanical efficiency. The space planning is typical of a local two story home, with public spaces on the ground floor and private spaces upstairs.

The ground floor includes a two car garage, double height entry foyer with stair, living and dining rooms, and kitchen with pantry.

The second floor includes two bedrooms with a shared bath, adjacent laundry room and a generous primary suite with a private bathroom that opens onto a walled garden terrace. All of these spaces are shaped with sloped ceilings and roofs similar to other houses in the neighborhood and critical to the exterior appearance of the home.

From the street, the house assimilates into the neighborhood with its sloped roofs, stepped elevations, window proportions and approved materials.
